Hardmode is only activated when the Wall of Flesh has been defeated. It adds a new half or the game, as well as some more biomes, like Hallowed, underground corruption or mushroom. There are more N.P.Cs, items, and armor. A solar eclipse also happens when at least one mechanical boss has been defeated.
